Wayne and Doris farmed there until 1971, when Wayne went to work for Jim Moore at the Russell Ready Mix. In 1974, Wayne and Doris moved to Humeston, Iowa when Wayne became plant manager at the Humeston Ideal Ready Mix. Wayne was a member of the Humeston Volunteer Fire Department for 42 years and served as Fire Chief from 1979 to 1994. He also served on the Humeston city council for a number of years. After retirement from Ideal, he worked for Coffey Farms and remained active in the fire department as long his health permitted. The couple remained in Humeston until late 2016, when they moved to The Homestead in Centerville. Wayne was extremely proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
