Verlon Metzger's Obituary
Verlon Metzger, 87, of Corydon passed away at his home on Friday, July 12, 2019. Verlon was born in Chariton, Iowa on June 14, 1932 to Phil and Nina (Allred) Metzger. After graduating from Cambria High School in 1950, he married Marian Frazier in 1952 and to this union, five children were born. Later, he married Maxine West and the couple remained married until her passing in 2017. Verlon began his working career as a farmer before he and his father learned the carpentry business and started Metzger Building and Repair. They operated the business for several years before other family members took over. In later years, Verlon drove a school bus, worked at the sheriff's department as a night watchman and started up Metzger Wrecker Service before fully retiring. In his spare time, Verlon enjoyed socializing with the community. He could be found every morning at Hy-Vee with a cup of coffee and visiting with the local residents. He received his pilot's license and enjoyed flying airplanes. Survivors include his children: Gary Metzger, Donna Motz (Bill), Rick Metzger (Jill), and Diana Gerving; 10 grandchildren: Jennifer, Seanna, Kaila, Randy Joe, Ryan, Byran "Scott", Rachel, Megan, Lindsey and Dylan; several great grandchildren; five stepchildren: Vickie Shafer, Susan Davis (Daryl), Earnest West (Susan), Daniel West (Danette) and James West (Connie); 19 step grandchildren, 40 step great grandchildren and 9 step great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine; son Randy Metzger, and sister, Evelyn. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will immediately follow at Corydon Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 17 with family present from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
