Thomas "Doc" James Douglas' Obituary
Thomas James "Doc" Douglas Doc was called home on March 30th, 2015 to the arms of our Lord after a short battle with cancer. He passed peacefully at home in the presence of friends and family. Doc was born October 17, 1937 to Walter E. and Rozella Douglas (Johnson) and spent his childhood growing up around Tracy, Iowa. He had the honor to play on two Tracy High School teams that made the Iowa state tournament in baseball and basketball. After graduating in 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Janice Douglas (Miller) and signed a contract to play professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals but shoulder and knee injuries forced him to abandon his baseball dream just as it was starting. He then attended William Penn University where he participated in varsity baseball and basketball while earning a degree in education. Doc utilized his college degree and started a teaching and coaching career in 1961. The career began in Richland, moved on to Eddyville, then to Interstate 35 in St. Charles and ended at Wayne of Corydon. Along the way he and Jan welcomed four sons all of whom Doc had the opportunity to instruct and coach. His teaching career ended with his retirement in 1995 after educating the youth of Iowa for over 34 years. He was able to touch the lives of thousands of students and high school athletes along his journey. Following retirement, he spent his time playing his other true love golf and attending sporting events that starred his grandchildren. The family sends a special thanks to Paul Niday who volunteered a kidney for Doc's transplant. Doc was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Maxine Lois who died at birth. He is survived by his wife, his boys and their ten children, Timothy James (Robbie) and children Ashleigh, Addison and Mackenzie, Thomas Jeffrey (Lena) and children Brandon, Brett and Briana, Terry Jay (Sareah) and children Garrett and Brooke and Tracy Joseph (Jean) and children Jordan and Jaxson and one great-grandchild.
