Sherry Lynn Rembe Obituary's Obituary
Sherry Rembe, 59, lost her battle with breast cancer, Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Hospice Suite in the Corydon Hospital. Her family was able to donate her corneas per her request. Sherry was born January 5, 1953, in Iowa City, Iowa, the elder of two daughters, to Russell and Shirley Ross. She married Thomas Rembe, April 24, 1970. Sherry attended University High in Iowa City, graduating a year early as a National Merit Scholar and as salutatorian of her class in 1970. While at University High, she was a member of the tennis team, distinguishing herself by qualifying for the State Tennis Tournament her junior year, placing second. After graduation, Sherry went on to attend the University of Iowa, graduating in 1977, with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Elementary Education. Graduating with a teaching degree, Sherry followed in her father Russell's footsteps, as he was a political science professor at the University of Iowa for over 40 years. Sherry took her first and only teaching job at the Seymour Community School District in 1977 with her husband Tom who also accepted a teaching position in Seymour the same year. Sherry taught 4th and 5th grades for Seymour for 17 years, before retiring in 1994. In addition to teaching, Sherry often wrote elementary curriculum for many grades during the summer. Sherry was also instrumental in beginning the Seymour Little Girls' Softball League. After teaching, she put her literary talents to use when she became the typesetter for The Seymour Herald. In addition to typesetting, she enjoyed designing numerous ads for the newspaper. Sherry also typed and edited author Maurice Stamps's Shoal Creek Legends book series and SNAFUS and Love Letters: Memories of an Old GI. In her spare time, Sherry enjoyed reading and fishing. She also ran in numerous 5K competitions and in the Drake Marathon in 1984, finishing third in her age group. Her family and friends will remember her for her sense of humor. She was often in charge of planning the Ross family Christmas get-togethers and every year she designed the entire celebration around a central theme. Sherry is survived by her husband Tom of Seymour; daughter Camie Hill (Tom) of Udell; grandson Thad of Udell, sister Julie Ross Blum of Waukee; three nephews: Scott Blum (Cara), Austin Blum, and Brenton Blum; and three grandnephews. Internment will be September 30 at 2 p.m. at Southlawn Cemetery in Seymour with a small get-together at the Seymour together at the Seymour Community Center to follow. In lieu of Community Center to flowers, memorials may be given to the Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure or Hospice of Central Iowa.
