Ruby Juanita Gorden's Obituary
Ruby J. Gorden; age 97, of Winton California died December 12, 2011 in Turlock, California.
She was born the daughter of William and Addie (McConnell) Hull July 5 1914 near Bunch Iowa. Ruby was married on June 15, 1935 to Floyd Gorden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd Gorden; four brothers Milo, Woodrow, Donald and an infant brother; Sisters, Dorothy Hanrahan, Mary Maas, Agnes Cridlebaugh, an infant sister and son-in-law Bart Sandhu.
Ruby is survived by her sister Helen Jobe of Eldon, Iowa; children James (Mary) Gorden of LemonCove, Ca; Charles Gorden of Winton, Ca; Nancy (Paul) Martasian of Sacramento, Ca; and Margaret Sandhu of Modesto, Ca. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Megan Morreale, Milo Gorden, David Martasian, Rachel Dadigan, Sarah Regnani, Sohnia Sandhu, Resham Sandhu, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Ruby graduated from Unionville Community Schools in Unionville, Iowa. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and received her bachelor's degree from Drake University in Des Moines Iowa. She began her teaching career at the age of 17, teaching in several one room schoolhouses in rural Iowa. She loved teaching and had a passion for learning and working with children, touching many lives with her positive influences. On coming to California in 1955, she taught in Livingston and then in Atwater, California, retiring in 1982 after a teaching career of 42 years.
After retirement from teaching, she traveled extensively throughout the world, including trips to Russia, China, Scotland, England, North Africa and many other wonderful places. She organized a travel program for the Atwater, California AARP chapter with several trips a year to both local and distant points of interest. Ruby was a member of Winton Grange, and was Education Chair for 20 years. She served on the first Board of the Merced School Employees Credit Union, and in many other community roles; as a 4-H leader, Girl Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, School Board Member, to name a few.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the Unionville Baptist Church, Unionville, Iowa with Pastor Jesse Hill officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 5-8PM at the Lange Funeral Home, Centerville, Iowa. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Unionville, Iowa. Condolences may be left at www.langefh.com.
