Ron Mastin's Obituary
Ronald Dean Mastin was born on September 28th, 1938 to Ed and Marvah (Hull) Mastin in Wayne County Iowa. Surrounded by his family, Ron went on to be with our Lord on November 15th, 2018 at the Wayne County hospital. Ronald 'Baby' Mastin attended school in Corydon. He met his sweetheart, Barb Ryan in 1956. They courted for four years and were married on June 5th, 1960 in Barb's parent's home. Ron and Barb were blessed with three children, Bradley Ronald Mastin (died at birth), Cheryl Lynn Mastin, and Carissa Jo Homann. Their daughters enjoyed participating in sports and 4-H, Ron and Barb rarely missed an event. Ron especially enjoyed helping the girls with their 4-H projects because of his love for horses. This passion continued with grandchildren and their many activities. Over the years Ron enjoyed riding horses, playing pool (he was Wayne County's pool shark at one time), and especially loved playing golf in the Men's League on Wednesday evenings with brother-in-law and good buddy, Doyle Clark. As a young man, Ron helped his Father haul coal. He went on to work locally as a farm hand. In 1961 he moved his family to Black Hawk County where he continued to work as a farm hand. Ron had a genuine love for livestock and agriculture. Homesick for Wayne County they returned in 1964. For a brief period of two weeks, Ron was without a job for the only time in his entire life. He then accepted an entry level position with Deflecta Shield, where he went on to serve for more than 30 years. Ron spent many years as the Plant Manager. He was greatly respected by his employees given the fact he worked his way up from the factory floor. Evenings and weekends Ron cut saw logs with his father and brother. Honest, hard work with his hands was a way of life for Ron. After retiring from his professional career, Ron hung out his own shingle as a carpenter and local handy man. He was a jack of all trades and would gladly help anyone with a need. Ron loved woodworking projects and with the help of his family built his own wood working shop. He spent many hours there completing 'projects' for family and friends. Each of Ron's grandchildren have taken a turn at learning to drive a nail in Papa's Woodshop. Her are some little known facts about Ron Mastin... Ron acquired his nickname, Baby, because he was the youngest of four boys and was more than a little spoiled by his Mother. He sang with a group called 'The Platters'. Group members were Tom Patterson, Gary Broghart, Jim Chandler, and manager Alan Grimes. They cut a record, sang on KTVO, and for school dances. Ron was also a gifted yodler. While courting Barbara Ryan, this feisty, red haired brawler would readily chase off any and all competition. Ron was preceded in death by parents, Ed and Marvah, brothers, Art (Ellen), Jim (Barb), and Raymond (Kay), infant son, Bradley, nephews, Joey, Terry and Bruce. He is survived by wife, Barb, daughters, Cheryl and Crissy (Bill), grandchildren, Ashley (Justin Bickel), Amber (George Bailey) Dylan, Ridge (Madison), and Chey, great grandchildren, Saylor Bickel, Reggie Bailey, and Nash Bailey due to arrive in February, sister-in-law, Karen Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 20th starting at 10:30 am at the Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon, Iowa. Interment will immediately follow at the Allerton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on Monday, November 19th at the Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon, Iowa.
