Richard ""Storm"" Harrington's Obituary
Richard ""Storm"" Harrington, age 91 of Unionville, Iowa passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Golden Age Care Center in Centerville, Iowa.
He was born January 30, 1923 in Unionville, Iowa to Paul and Myrtle (Locker) Harrington. Richard graduated from Unionville High School with the class of 1940. Following high school, Richard enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country faithfully in World War II on the U.S.S. Thompson Destroyer. Richard was honorably discharged on February 16, 1946.
Richard married Edith (Betty) Lucille Bainbridge in Lancaster, Missouri on November 10, 1947 and to this union of marriage four children were born, Elaine, Phillip, David and Brian.
He spent many years farming land in Appanoose County. Richard and Betty eventually purchased a farm west of Unionville, Iowa in 1958. Richard was also employed with the Appanoose County Road Department for nearly thirty years. He operated a maintainer with the county until his retirement in the mid 1980s.
Richard was active in numerous clubs and organizations throughout his lifetime, including the Unionville American Legion, the Southern Iowa Foxhunters Association, membership with the NRA, a member of the Unionville Methodist Church and a school board member with the Moravia School District in the late 1960s.
He was the definition of a true outdoorsman. Richard loved running his coonhounds and coyote dogs. He was especially fond of fox hunting. He also enjoyed the opportunity to go fishing. Richard was also known for being extremely athletic. His passion for sports included competing in both baseball and fast pitch softball leagues throughout his lifetime. It should be stated that Richard was an elite participant in these leagues. He was simply one of the best to ever compete in fast pitch ball.
Richard is survived by his four children, Elaine (G.E.) Luse of Moravia, Iowa, Phillip (Barbara) Harrington of Unionville, Iowa, David (Peggy) Harrington of Ottumwa, Iowa and Brian (Linda) Harrington of Bloomfield, Iowa; a sister, Gerry (Joe) Wilson of Centerville, Iowa; two sister-in-laws, Helen Harrington of Unionville, Iowa and Janice Alexander of Ottumwa, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Julie (Jeff) Major of Albia, Jodi (A.J.) Peterson of Madrid, Iowa, Stephanie (Jeff) Baylor of Moravia, Paul (Erin) Harrington of Blakesburg, Richard Harrington of Oskaloosa, Jenny Ward of Ottumwa, Jill (Charlie) Ryan of Newton, Jamie (Jr.) Swart of Cedar Falls, Spencer Harrington of Bloomfield and Ross Harrington of Fort Stewart, Georgia; and nineteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith (Betty) Harrington; and two brothers, Neil Forrest Harrington and John Harrington.
Memorial services will be held at 3 PM, Friday, March 21, 2014 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia, Iowa with Reverend Jim Matheney officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday at Lange Funeral Home from 1-3 PM. Inurnment with military rites will follow in the Unionville Cemetery in Unionville, Iowa. Memorials have been established to either the Unionville American Legion Post 407 or the Unionville Methodist Church and may be given to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
