Richard "Dick" Eugene Owens' Obituary
Richard "Dick" Eugene Owens, age 72 of Allerton, passed away on June 18, 2025, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa.
Dick was born on March 15, 1953, to Rodrick and Magdelena (Pearcy) Owens. He was the only boy, and middle child to his two sisters Linda and Debra. He graduated from Wayne Community with the class of 1971.
After high school, Dick attended United Electronics Institute in West Des Moines, Iowa, graduating in 1976. After graduation Dick accepted a position at WOI/Iowa Public Radio with Iowa State University starting as technician in training and ending as a senior technician and engineering consultant when he retired in 2021. Dick was very patriotic being the proud son of a WW2 Navy Veteran and a member of the American Legion. He took pride in coordinating the radio transmission of the Yankee Doodle Pops held at the Iowa State Capitol grounds on the 4th of July each year, ensuring a clear and trouble-free transmission of the music and the event for all the world to hear and enjoy.
Dick loved the outdoors and was active in encouraging conservation and preservation of hunting and fishing through his expertise and exercise of the sports. A wonderful loving, caring and engaged uncle, he taught his nieces and nephews these sports by sharing his gifts with the next generation. Dick was an accomplished deer and turkey hunter as well as long-range marksman, participating in prairie dog events out west.
Dick was skilled mechanically and could diagnose, troubleshoot and repair nearly any mechanical or electrical device. His workshop was a fascinating place, and Dick would tell you in detail what he was doing even when you did not understand. Dick was a master HAM radio operator proudly holding the highest license rating.
Family and friends, fellowship, food, and fun were key drivers in Dicks life. Dick loved his family and friends being the one you could count on when help was needed. If you had a problem all you needed to do was call Dick. He would listen and then ask when should I be there?
Dick loved good food and was proud contributor to chili fests, and his pickle rolls were legendary. Dick enjoyed attending community faith breakfasts sharing food and fellowship with friends. He was always eager to learn about recent technology and enjoyed understanding and mastering recent programs and practices.
Dick is survived by his sisters Linda (James) Todden and Debra Wilson (Robert Petersen); nieces, Jessica Todden, Meghan (Jeff) Sunga, and Nicole Wilson (Adam Canty); nephews, Zachary (Jenny) Todden, Alex Todden, and Jacob (Dasha) Wilson; great nieces and nephews, Lucas, Jay, Jaxton, and Alyssa; 2 great-great nieces, along with other extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 2:00PM, at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM-2:00 PM, one hour prior to the service at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon.
