Mabel Corder's Obituary
Mabel Corder, 98, of Centerville, passed away on September 6, 2017 at Golden Age Care Center. Mabel was born on April 27, 1919 to Gail Foster Stites near Moravia, Iowa. After graduating Centerville High School in 1935, she began working at the "Dew Drop In," a local restaurant in Centerville. In the fall of 1936, Mabel began teaching at Brush School and later at Daily School, both of which were rural one-room schools. She married Carl Corder in Centerville on December 24, 1940. The couple was well known for their Christian faith and its participation in and strong support of church ministries. In that vein, Mabel became known for her special hospitality to both family, friends, and a few strangers that frequently visited them in their home. Her gracious and kind spirit became a trait for which she became well known . She was an amazing mother to three children that were born while she and Carl farmed near Cincinnati, IA, and one child born during their many years of living in Moline, IL. In their retirement years, she and Carl returned to the Centerville area and became endeared to many more people including those who cared for her during the last six years of her life at the Golden Age Nursing Center in Centerville. Mabel is survived by her sons: Richard Corder of Moline, Illinois and Kevin (Colleen) Corder of Monmouth, Oregon; daughter, Karen (David) Schwartzkopf of Indianapolis, Indiana; brother, Raymond Junior Stites of Marshalltown, Iowa; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl in 2004; her mother, Gail Stites in 2009; sisters: Vivian Manning and Jennie Lee Grimm; son, Larry Corder and daughter in law, Diana Corder. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville. Interment will immediately follow at Sunset View Cemetery in Moulton. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the South Sudan African Mission or Orleans Church of Christ.
