Janet Mortimore's Obituary
Janet Arlene Mortimore Jan was born to Jacob and Clara (Steinbrink) Bertram in Falls City, Nebraska on April 19, 1938. She passed away peacefully due to complications from a stroke on February 16, 2018 in hospice care at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa. Jan grew up in southeastern Nebraska, graduating from Falls City High School and Peru State Teachers' College. She worked briefly before continuing her education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. In Ames, she was married to Robert Mortimore in April 1962 and to this union, four children were born. In the fall of 1970, the family moved to their home in Clio, Iowa where they have resided since. Jan did some substitute teaching in Lineville and she worked hard raising her family, preserving food from a large garden and participating in the Community of Christ church. Her children learned not only how to sew clothes, bake bread and grow vegetables but also how to share a smile, welcome a guest and plant a flower. When Clio needed a bookkeeper, she stepped up and became the City Clerk. She later became the clerk of Lineville as well, adding utility billing and customer service to her duties. When the need for a water treatment operator arose in Lineville, Jan's background in chemistry allowed her to whiz through the state certification process to fill the gap. She continued on, achieving the highest certifications in water treatment and added wastewater treatment to provide services for several towns in Wayne and Decatur counties. She thoroughly enjoyed providing these necessary services for the community and also mentoring the next generation. Jan eventually turned over the city clerk duties and pretended to retire. Jan was a very creative person and enjoyed crocheting and needlework through the years. Her greatest art was the joy of coming up with creative ideas for greeting cards and making them from any materials she could find. Many times a random discarded item she spied during one of her walks would be transformed into a cheerful greeting for someone's holiday. She made sure anyone she could think of received birthday and holiday greetings right on time. There are many that will miss the cheer and good wishes she was so happy to spread far and wide. Jan is preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Carol and three brothers, Donald (infant brother), George and Bob. She is survived by her husband Robert Mortimore; sister Linda Bell; children, Chris Mortimore, Karen (Ralph) Richardson, Curtis (Melanie) Mortimore, and Angie (Rod)Parham; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, many nieces and nephews and an entire community that will miss her generous heart. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will immediately follow at Clio Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. In lieu of flowers please honor of Jan's dedication to providing water for communities and her firm belief in helping others with different talents by giving memorials to Water for People or to Camp Courageous of Iowa.
