He passed away at his home in Seymour, Iowa on April 1, 2012 at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 0 days. His family moved to Seymour soon after his birth where he completed school up to the 8th grade. After school Jim farmed, worked in a coal mine and drove truck. Jim started his own business, Pershy Roofing and Painting, in 1961 and to this day the family business is still going strong. Jim married Margaret Veronica Schaefer on November 29, 1952 and to this union 3 children were born. James Jr, Jack and Joann. Big Jim was a Seymour icon; he raised great kids and grandkids. He was known to many by the name of Gramps. He enjoyed trapping, coon hunting, looking for mushrooms, fishing, and the Atlanta Braves. But his all time favorite was playing cards especially a game of pitch. After his eye sight failed him he was forced to retire but you could still find him everyday at the job site with the guys supervising under a shade tree eating ice cream. He was a devoted husband to his wife, after losing her to breast cancer in 1987 he enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up. James was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his parents and brothers Charles and Frank. He is survived by his children James Pershy (Bambi) of Seymour; Jack (Jane) Pershy of Corydon and Joann (Rusty) Hunter of Mercer, TN. Brothers Raymond (Patricia) Pershy of Milan, IL; John (Mary) Pershy of Silvis, IL and sisters in law Beverly Pershy of Muscatine, IA and Marge Pershy. Grandchildren: Tyson (Jeri) Pershy of Centerville; Tanya (Shannon) Seddon of Mystic; Teather (Andy) Ingold of Centerville; Truett Pershy of Seymour; Todd (Dawn) Pershy of Walker; Tabitha (Scott) Sarsfield of Urbandale; Tessa (Adam) Fisher of Excelsior Springs, MO; Traci Coates of Corydon; Jeremy (Helen) Hunter of Bells, TN; Kelly (Brian) Williams of Brownsville, TN; Jarad Hunter of Mercer, TN; 26 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. God must have had a leak in his roof and he needed the best to fix it. He will be missed dearly by many but he is now reunited with the one he loved after 25 years. Memorials can be made to Susan G.
