Iva Ferne Jay's Obituary
Iva Ferne Jay, 101 of Moulton, passed away Friday, September 29, 2023 at Mercy One Long Term Care in Centerville.
Ferne was born to Joseph & Ellen (Hammons) Johnson on June 17, 1922 in Moulton. Ferne received her education from Moulton High School, graduating in 1939. She then went on to attend Bloomfield Junior College and Parsons. In 1966, she received her BA from Truman.
On May 19, 1946, Ferne was united in marriage to Elvin Jay. To this union came one son, Dan. Ferne was a teacher for 38 years teaching at Eldorado and Hughes, which were country schools, Sperry, Moulton, and Bloomfield. Educating kids was something Ferne enjoyed throughout her life. After Ferne's grandchildren were in school, she began volunteering at Moulton. Ferne joined the Moulton Methodist church when she was 12. She was very active teaching Sunday school, working with youth, member of UMW and taking on various other responsibilities. Ferne hated sitting still. She was very active in many organizations, including Davis County Retired teachers, District 5 coordinator for 13 years for retired teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, life member of ISEA, life member of IRSPA, Moulton Legion Auxiliary, Rebekah's, and Chapter F, PEO. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, needle point, flowers and reading Mary Higgins Clark. She also enjoyed time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ferne loved to make pecan pies. A holiday dinner was never complete without her pie. She taught her granddaughter, Ashley, how to make her pecan pie when it became difficult for her to bake. Ferne's coffin is made of 100% pecan. When we found out it was made of pecan, it made our selection very easy.
Survivors include her son, Dan Jay (Julie), grandchildren: Ashley Garr (Kevin), Caleb Jay (Kaylie), Marshall Jay (Amanda), great grandchildren: Jayme Garr, Haley Garr, Loralei Jay and Maddison Jay.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 5 brothers and 6 sisters.
Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Moulton United Methodist Church. Interment will immediately follow at Hardin Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Thomas Funeral Home in Moulton from 12-7 pm, with family present from 5-7 pm. In lieu of memorials, Ferne's family requests you give time and/or resources to the Garrett Memorial Library or local schools.
