Ferne was always such a special lady to me. I'm sure she's known me since I was born. I remember eating delicious meals at church functions, where I know she had played a part in the preparation of the food. I'd always see her in the kitchen behind the serving windows, hard at work. I can remember being at her house with my mom for what was probably some type of meeting for ladies of the church, and she had a professional style video game of either Pac Man or Space Invaders in the basement. I thought that was about the coolest thing I'd ever seen and couldn't wait for my chance to play it!
As I entered junior high, Ferne tutored me in math. She was the BEST teacher. Math was certainly not my strongest subject, and my teachers at school weren't connecting the dots for me. But Ferne did! I always enjoyed sitting at her kitchen table with her as she explained things so clearly for me! Because of our bonding during this time, when she took a trip to Europe, she brought me back some gifts. I clearly remember a bottle of perfume from Paris, and a sachet, bell, and handkerchief from Switzerland. I can't tell you how special that made me feel to have these special treasures from Europe! I displayed them for many years!
Other highlights of my memories of Ferne were that she was a long-term substitute for my high school English class one year. She was the grandmother of three pretty neat kids (Ashley, Caleb, and Marshall) that I had the pleasure of babysitting. She was always there for big life events, such as graduations, bridal showers, weddings, and baby showers. And last but not least, every time we came back to Moulton to visit and were at church, she was always sure to come over, give me a big hug, and get updated on the latest life happenings. Ferne was one of a kind and will be greatly missed! Condolences to her family. May your memories of her live on in you forever!
