Howard Lewis Hays Obituary's Obituary
Howard Lewis Hays, age 85, passed away on August 1, 2013 at Serenity House in Oskaloosa, Iowa after an extended illness. He was born on December 26, 1927 on the family farm in Leighton, Iowa to John Virgil Hays and Edna Bartlema Hays. He married Joan Burbank on July 16, 1950. They were later divorced but remained life-long friends. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters Lynda Fletcher (Jan) and Cyndi Beavers (Terry Gattan); sons David Hays and Michael Hays (Karen); six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as many treasured nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; stepson Craig Dodson (Cindy) and stepdaughter Tammy Baze. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother Matti Hays, his sister Florence Johnson and brother-in-law Ray Johnson; sister Beulah Williams and brother-in-law Lloyd Williams. Howard served in the Army Air Corps from February 1946 until August 1947. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. He served 31 years on the Iowa Highway Patrol and retired in 1983. He went on to become involved in many other projects including American Legion Baseball and was inducted into the Legion Hall of Fame in 1987. He moved to Oregon in 1987 where he met Dorothy and they spent 23 very happy years together traveling to the coast, working on the farm and in the garden, and taking care of family pets. The family requests that memorials be directed to the Parkinson's Disease Association.
