Howard Lewis Hays, age 85, passed away on August 1, 2013 at Serenity House in Oskaloosa, Iowa after an extended illness. He was born on December 26, 1927 on the family farm in Leighton, Iowa to John Virgil Hays and Edna Bartlema H Read Obituary
We visited relatives in Iowa in 1957 and I helped unload cements blocks for the basement of theit new house. We are sorry to hear of his death and extend our condolances wish the best for the family Bob and Etta Hays
My condolences to all of you. I so enjoyed my time with Howard, what a sense of humor he had with everything that was going on in his life. My added bonus was to meet his family, amazing children. Take care of yourselves. Dorothy thank you for all the talks we shared. I will be thinking of you at this sad time. You will be in my thoughts as you return to Oregon.

Sometime in the mid '70's, Howard pulled over a young man for speeding. This fresh out of high school lead footer was traveling to college at Northeast Missouri State. Upon reviewing the drivers license of Gary Whipple, it was noted that Gary was from DeWitt. Howard asked him if he knew of the Fletcher family. Gary said yes, that he had graduated with Ron Fletcher. Howard asked Gary to name as many of the Fletcher siblings as he could(as there were ten). Apparently he recalled enough to satisfy Howard, as he proceeded to forgo the speeding ticket and write Gary a warning. Some would say it's often times 'who you know'.
