Donald Francis Shanahan, 86 of Centerville passed away Friday, January 8, 2010 at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab in Oskaloosa. Don was born to David and Edna(Peel) Shanahan on February 8, 1923 in Centerville. He married Pearl McCoy on September 27, 1942 in Unionville, Missouri. Don received his education from Centerville High School graduating in 1942. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was in Berlin during the final days of the war. Don worked for Hawkeye Lumber Company and retired after 40 years of service. During his career he managed lumberyards in Centerville, Muscatine and Albia. Don was widely known as a gardener and his garden drew praise yearly from all who knew him. He enjoyed hunting and woodworking in his retirement. In later years, he dedicated himself to caring for his wife who suffered many years with Alzheimer's disease. Don was a member of the First Baptist Church in Centerville for over 50 years. Don is survived by two children; David Shanahan(Melinda) of Oskaloosa, Sherry Brill(Bob) of West Burlington, two grandchildren; Heather Haefner(Pat) of Oskaloosa, Ashley Heid(Chris) of Swisher, Iowa and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl, daughter, Linda, grandson, Jeffrey Hackathorn, parents, two brothers, Clifford and Bernard Shanahan. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the Thomas Funeral Home with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior from 10-11 a.m.. A private family interment will be held in Oakland Cemetery.
