Chester O. Hackathorn Obituary's Obituary
Chester Otto Hackathorn, 87, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon. He was born March 21, 1922 to Arthur & Loretta (Knapp) Hackathorn in Melrose, Iowa. Chet served as a Technical Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He received a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, commendations from General Dwight D. Eisenhower and the prestigious Soldier's Medal for voluntarily risking his life to save a civilian. Chet owned a trucking company and retired from driving in 1995. He enjoyed flying planes, working in the yard and cooking. He was an avid storyteller and could often be found visiting with friends and family. Survivors include three children: Michael Hackathorn (Barbra) of Ocala, Florida, Steve Hackathorn (Pattie) of Collinsville, Alabama, Andrea Tilley (Kevin) of Corydon, 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a sister, Patricia Wenzel of North Aurora, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents, son David Hackathorn, grandson Jeffrey David Hackathorn, three sisters: Garnet Beary, Opal Fisher, Helen Hackathorn and five brothers: Gale, Paul, Edward and infants John and Thomas Hackathorn. Services will be at 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Thomas Funeral Home, with Rev. Charles Tilley officiating. Visitation will be all day Monday at the funeral home with the family present from 6-8 pm. Interment will be in Haines Cemetery.
