My name is Vicki. I am so sorry for your loss. I had the honor and joy of getting to know Caryl through the Meals on Wheels program. I have way too many stories to share from the last 5 or so years, but I will tell you that Caryl has impacted my life forever and she will always live in my heart. Her laugh was contagious. Her compassion was contagious. Her desire for people to feel loved was contagious. I'd often tell her she was my favorite client and remind her she could not tell anybody I said that. We'd laugh and then she'd say, "Oh, Hon. You just made my day." But she was always the one that made MY day. She always greeted me wearing one of her colorful hand-sewn pantsuits with beautifully styled hair - she looked so put-together and adorable every day. She loved telling stories about her life - everything from when she was a little girl and got a step-mom to her life of sewing to raising children to becoming an older woman ... and lessons of growth along the way. The hundreds of masks she made to give away during the pandemic even when her hands and body hurt spoke volumes of her desire to do good works to be a blessing and light in this world. She said that doing something nice for others did more for her soul than for the person she was helping. She prepared me many times that she was ready to go. She had great faith. She'd tell me I could not be sad, that she was going home to be with her dad and mom (who she lost too young) and all of her siblings, and her husband. So, as I write this, I am trying not to be sad, but to instead be thankful that God brought Caryl into my life and that she shared herself with me. She was a tiny package, but a whole lot of special. I am taking my family out to Steak and Shake to get a "malt" in her honor to toast her life. And I will always love her. Much love to her family, whom she spoke of often with great love and pride, Vicki Holthaus Coralville, Iowa
