Wilma I. Garton Wilma I. Garton, age 85, passed away on Wednesday March 24, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Ia.. from complications related to a previous battle with cancer. Wilma was born in Lucas County Ia., on September 15, 1924 and was married to Charles P. Garton on November 29. 1942. She lived her entire life in southern Iowa, mainly in the Cambria area., and was very active in the community and church. Wilma was loved very dearly by all who knew her. She was a member of the Alva F. Eaton Unit #306 American Legion Auxiliary of Humeston, and a member and president of the Friendly Circle Club. Wilma was also a member of the Cambria Garden Club for over 50 years, and an active member of the Cambria Baptist Church for over 60 years. Wilma was a grandmother, mother, and caregiver to many. She had a loving heart and was willing to help everyone. She enjoyed babysitting for church members, and many families of the community. No matter where she went, she always wore a hat. Wilma was known for her cooking and baking, particularly for her cinnamon rolls, delicious pies, and famous noodles. She served as a cook in the Cambria school for over 10 years while her children were growing up. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles P. Garton (Junior), and grandson, Thaddeus D. Garton. She is also preceded in death by her parents, Gaylord and Veta Anderson Loney, three sisters, Francis Terrell, Marion Loney and Barbara Hunt-Fitzgerald, and brother Richard C. Loney. Her surviving family members are her children; Charles (Betty) Garton of Omaha: Dana (Rene) Vela of Des Moines; Ron Garton, of Des Moines; Tony (Dorothy) Garton, of Des Moines; Shane (Gloria) Garton, of Wilmington North Carolina; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grand children; her sisters LaVerne Street of Cambria; Marlis Luttrell, of Denver Colorado; many nieces and nephews, and long time friends in the community. Wilma has now joined her deceased loved ones in a better place. We know she looks down on us with love and pride. We will miss her fighting spirit, eagerness to serve, loving smile and friendly hugs. We will always remember her departing advise to us when we would leave from a visit to her home. With a sly smile she would always say: "Watch Out For The Deer!".
