Wilma May (Ivins) Griffin Wilma May (Ivins) Griffin, daughter of Benjamin (Ben) Arthur, Jr. and Vera May (Mendenhall) Ivins, was born March 2, 1929, on a farm near Derby and passed away June 16, 2010 at the Wayne County Hospital at the age of 81 years after a brief illness of pancreatic cancer. On March 3, 1951, Wilma was united in marriage to George Monroe Griffin. To this union one daughter, Barbara May was born. George and Wilma were married 53 years before his death on June 28, 2004. In 1930, the Ivins family moved to a farm southwest of Chariton where they farmed until 1940 when they bought their family farm two miles east of Corydon. Wilma grew up here and graduated from Corydon High School in 1947. Wilma went to work immediately for the federal government at the Wayne County AAA Office, later known as the Wayne County ASCS Office, where she worked for 26 years. After her marriage to George, she became a farm wife and mother while continuing to work. In 1974 George and Wilma sold the farm and moved to their new home they built in Corydon where she continued to live until she went to the hospital the last time. Wilma was 10-year 4-H club member, served 10 years as a 4-H leader, participated in many school activities while Barbara was in school, was chosen Y-Teen Mother of the Year, served on the Extension Board, and was a long time member of the Jolly Neighbor Club. Her hobbies were ceramics and crossword puzzles. She also collected teddy bears and angels. George and Wilma enjoyed traveling over the years and had been in all 50 states and all of the Canadian provinces. They were also great fans of country music. Wilma had really enjoyed going to Branson the last few years with Barb and Mike while on vacation. Wilma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was her pride and joy. She followed closely all of Barbara's school and 4-H activities. When the grandsons came along, she and George followed all three grandsons' sports events and school and 4-H activities. She was always proud of their accomplishments. Wilma was happiest when her family was around her and she was doing things for them. It was always a special time during the holidays. She was especially proud of her great-grandchildren and received much enjoyment from them including their many hugs and kisses. Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, parents and niece Donna Holder. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Barbara and husband Mike Kent of Promise City; three grandsons, Jonathan and wife Bridgett of Lineville, Patrick of Altoona, and Jason and wife Angie of Promise City; five great-grandchildren, Chad and Samantha of Lineville, Kolt, McKenna, Maggie May and just recently Cerah all of Promise City; one sister Dorothy and husband Eugene Riley of Corydon; one sister-in-law Marie Griffin and family of Corydon; one niece Linda Polsdofer and husband Roger of Corydon; also many great-nieces and great-nephews along with many friends from over the years.
