Viva Elfreda Harris Obituary's Obituary
Viva Elfreda (Batterson) Harris of Seymour, Iowa passed away May 3, 2012 at the Corydon Nursing & Rehab Center in Corydon, Iowa following a brief illness. Viva, the daughter of Coe and Vera Batterson, was born March 21, 1917 at Seymour, Iowa. She grew up on a farm east of Seymour and graduated in 1934 from Seymour High School where she took a normal training course so she could teach in country schools. She married Vincent Harris on January 11, 1940. They moved to a farm east of Seymour that was to be their home for 67 years. Viva was a schoolteacher and also worked in a grocery store. She was a constant companion to Vincent and helped him with fieldwork and truck driving. Viva was a hard worker until her health failed. She sewed all her clothing and made countless quilts and was a very good cook. She is survived by her daughter Rose Marie Carpenter (William) of Chariton, son Ron L. Harris (Joy) of Seymour, sisters Nadine Murphy of Yuma, Arizona, brothers-in-law Lynn (Ethel) Harris of Nevada, Iowa and Lawrence Harris and Reva of Durant, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Vincent, parents Coe and Vera Batterson, parents-in-law Jim and Grace Harris, sisters Lorraine LaGaissee and Bealah McCloud, sister-in-law Bobbie Harris and brothers-in-law Chuck LaGaissee, George McCloud, and Don Murphy. She spent the last seven years of her life in the nursing home and had just celebrated her 95th birthday. She will be greatly missed for all of her kindness and good work.
