Virginia Louise Barbaglia's Obituary
Virginia Louise Barbaglia, age 87, of Centerville, Iowa, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. She was born the daughter of Joseph and Natalina Barbaglia, Sr. on April 4, 1921 in Mystic, Iowa. She graduated from the Mystic Community Schools in 1938.Virginia began her career in 1944 in the Appanoose County Recorder's Office where she served eighteen years as deputy recorder. She served under A.S. Dukes, J.E. Ferren and C. E. Samson. She was elected to the position of Recorder in 1961, and served 21 years as recorder until 1982. A total of thirty-nine years was spent in the County Recorders Office. She maintained all the county's documents for land transactions, licenses, registrations, performed fed and state tax lien searches, Passports and many other duties. Virginia was a Republican, and an active member of the Republican Women's Club; served as precinct chairman for Bellaire Township.Virginia attended St. Francis Catholic Church in Mystic and later, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville. She served on Parish Council, numerous committees and as lecturer. For many years she volunteered to wash and iron the church linens. She was very active member of the BPW, the Professional Women's Club, serving in different ways. In 1980, Virginia was chosen as BPW Women of the Year. She was a long time member of the Bellaire Progressive Club, belonged to two bridge clubs, a bowling league, the Outlook Study Club and worked on various committees. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary where she served as treasurer, President-elect and later President for two terms. In 1989, she helped raise over $19,000.00 for the Hospital. She also served on the board of the local Concert Association.In addition to all her other interest, Virginia was an accomplished cook. She made the best Italian rice for her family gatherings. Broccoli casserole was one of her favorites, along with Italian green beans, and date pinwheel cookies at Christmas time.She was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Joseph Barbaglia, Jr, Peter Barbaglia and one infant brother; sisters, Lena Lovison and Helen Gavin; nephew, David Barbaglia and great nephew, Mark Gerstner.Virginia is survived by: her sister, Rose Barbaglia of Omaha, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.Mass of Resurrection will be held on Monday, May 26, 2008 at 11 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, Iowa with Fr. Mike Volkmer officiating. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery north of Mystic, Iowa. Visitation will be held a the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa on Sunday, May 25, 2008 from 1 pm till 5 pm at the funeral home and 6 pm till 8 pm at St. Mary's Catholic Church with a prayer service at 7:00 pm.Memorials can be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church and can be left at the funeral home.
