Virgil Bain's Obituary
Virgil Bain, 77, of Centerville, passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville on April 12, 2018. Virgil was born on May 11, 1940, in Mercer County, Missouri to the late Glenn and Bernice (Cox) Bain. August 5, 1962, Virgil married Arfleata Berndt and to this union, two children were born. After graduating from Spickard High School, Virgil attended Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (Truman State) and received his B.S. degree in Biology. He then went on to obtain his Master's Degree from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College majoring in Chemistry. He began his teaching career at Twin Cedars school in Bussey, Iowa where he taught junior high Science and high school Chemistry. In 1967, he moved to Centerville and spent the next 32 years as professor at Indian Hills Community College. He served on the board at Kids World and on various committees throughout his teaching career. In 1992, he and his son started Midwest Environmental Services Incorporated, an environmental consulting and test lab. In his spare time, Virgil enjoyed working and playing with his children and grandchildren. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and treasured the time he spent with them. He accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 16. He was a faithful member of Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church for almost 50 years. He also served as Greeter until 2014. Virgil is survived by his beloved wife, Arfleata; son, Michael (Holly) Bain; daughter, Debbie (Randy) Shatzer; granddaughters, Sydney and Katie Shatzer; step-grandson, James Ballerstein; two nieces, Nancy Waage and Sharon Durnell; as well as extended family members. He was preceded death by his parents; his brother, Harold Bain; sister-in-law, Wanda Bain; and niece, Barbara Dickerson. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church. Interment will immediately follow at Early Cemetery in Mercer, Missouri. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm on Monday, April 16, 2018, at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville.
