Vern "Red" Gebhart's Obituary
Vern 'Red' Gebhart, age 86, of Centerville, Iowa, died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. He was born the son of James W. and Clara (Russ) Gebhart on January 29, 1924 in Lewiston, Illinois.Red served his country during WWII with the United States Army Airborne. On December 31, 1948, Red was united in marriage to Violet 'Midge' Foster in Des Moines, Iowa. He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for several road construction firms. He was a member of the American Legion Post #214 and VFW Post #526 both in Centerville.He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, James, Robert and Marion Gebhart; sisters, Florence Marsh and Edith King.Red is survived by: his wife, Violet 'Midge' Gebhart of Centerville, Iowa; a son, Vern and his wife, Dale Gebhart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughters, Jean Kozak and her husband, Frank of Centerville, Iowa and Sue Gebhart and her husband, Karlin Sink; two grandchildren, Eric Kozak and his wife, Susan of West Des Moines, Iowa and Steven Kozak of Centerville, Iowa.Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 10 am at the First Baptist Church in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Lloyd Johnston officiating. Burial will follow at the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 from 1 pm till 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm at the funeral home.Memorials can be made to the First Baptist Church in Centerville and can be mailed to or left at the funeral home.
