Vera Phelps' Obituary
Vera Phelps, 90, of Mystic passed away, Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Centerville Nursing & Rehab. Vera was born on October 13, 1923 to Cliff & Deana Staley in Centerville. She was united in marriage to Jesse Phelps. Vera was a member of Mystic American Legion Auxiliary and a past president. She enjoyed fishing and camping. She and Jesse took camping trips all over Iowa. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting, gardening and time spent with her family and friends. Vera was employed at Sid's Grocery in Des Moines throughout the 60's. She left the grocery store after Jesse started his own roofing business, Hyland Roofing. Vera was the structure piece to their business. In 1989 the two retired and moved to Mystic where they have been since. She will be missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her husband Jesse Phelps of Mystic, son, Tom McMahon (Betty) of Pleasantville, two step children: Larry Phelps (Karen) of Evening Shade, Arkansas, Dickie Phelps of Jacksonville, Tennessee, five grandchildren, three step grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and one step great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her brother Gerald Staley. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Thomas Funeral Home. Interment will be in Elgin Cemetery in Mystic. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at Thomas Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the family.
