Velma A. 'Kitty' Stephens, 90 of Centerville passed away Saturday, September 29, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. She was born on November 23, 1916 in Albion, Nebraska to Cloy & Fannie (Johnson) Ayres. Velma received her education in Sydney, Iowa at Sydney High School graduating in 1932. She married Roy W. 'Bill' Stephens on June 4, 1939 in Shenandoah, Iowa. After living in several towns working for Hy-Vee, they relocated to Centerville in 1963, farmed, and later opened Favorite Sports. Velma was a member of Drake Ave Christian Church and a 50 year member of the Centerville Chapter 239 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed time spent with her family, her church, working at the store and being at the 18-80 Club. One of her greatest joys was visiting with friends. Velma is survived by four children; Sharon Morgan(Dave) of Des Moines, Jim Stephens(Linda) of Centerville, Dave Stephens(Trisha) of Centerville, Jan Allen(Dick) of Centerville, son-in-law; Gary Williams of Waverly, IA, 12 grandchildren; Mike Morgan(Monica), Chris Morgan, Kelley Leach(Nolan) Cara Stowe, Lindsey Ludwig(Mike), Ryan Stephens, Rachel Bridgeman(Dr. Robert), Brooke Hasson(Christopher), Greg Stephens, Dr. Andy Allen(Jimi Jo), Brian Allen(Shannon), and Nathan Allen(Kristin), eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Roy W. 'Bill' Stephens, daughter Linda Williams and six brothers. May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn. Visitation will be held all day Wednesday, October 3rd at Thomas Funeral Home with the family present from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 4th at Drake Ave. Christian Church with Rev. Carl Heien and Rev. Darold Snow officiating. Interment will be in Haines Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Drake Ave Christian Church or the 18-80 Club in Centerville which may be left at or mailed to Thomas Funeral Home - 23548 Hwy 5 - Centerville, IA 52544.
