Twyla Binau's Obituary
Twyla Arlene (Levis) Binau, 78, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord after a struggle with dementia on February 3, 2018. Twyla was born in Chariton, Iowa on October 17, 1939 to the late Raymond and Imogene (Scott) Levis. On June 5, 1960, she married Charles Binau and has remained a devoted and loving wife ever since. The pair started farming and lived in the same house in which Charles was born. Over the years, they moved many times: Corydon, Iowa in 1973, West Des Moines, Iowa in 1976, Gravois Mills, Missouri in 1981, Overland Park, Kansas in 1982, winters in Texas after retirement and finally returning to West Des Moines in December 2010. Twyla attended a secretarial program at the American Institute of Business (AIB) after high school. She began a career in the insurance industry as a typist and retired as an underwriter in 1996. Twyla volunteered to help with many organizations and churches over the years. Some of her favorite activities include using her crafting skills making prayer shawls for the church and blankets for Project Linus. She also loved hosting family gatherings. "Grandma T's" snickerdoodle cookies will always be remembered. Twyla is survived by her husband, Charles of West Des Moines; children: Carol (Rick) Broman of West Des Moines and Mark (Lisa) Binau of Valley Center, Kansas; grandchildren: Katelyn, Steven and Rachel; brothers: Ronald (Kathy) Levis of Rolla, Missouri and Donald (Cindy) Levis of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Dave) Higdon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa as well as several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held from 4:30-6:00 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Edgewater Senior Living Community in West Des Moines (please use main entrance.) Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home in Allerton with interment following at Allerton Cemetery.
