Tom Walter King's Obituary
Tom Walter King age 94, of Centerville, Iowa, died, Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center Long Term Care in Centerville. He was born the son of Walter and Nellie (Harrington) King on January 19, 1915 in Exline, Iowa. He graduated from the Centerville Community Schools. On April 19, 1947 he was united in marriage to Opal Talbot in Kansas City, Kansas. Tom entered the US Army and served his country during the WWII conflict as a Warrant Officer. Tom was a bookeeper and was the first City Clerk for Centerville. He was a member of the Appanoose County Historical Society, Sad Sacks Post #50, and was lifetime member of American Legion, AmVets, and the VFW all in Centerville. Tom received The Commonwealth Award in 1995 for his volunteer work. In 1997 he was the Chairperson for Area Agency on Ageing. He also spent fifteen years on the Ten County Board for SENACA Area on Ageing. Tom served three terms on the Old Iowa Legislature. He was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren near Unionville, Iowa.Tom is preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Opal King; brothers, Jack, Gene, Max, Bill, and Charles King.He is survived by: brothers, Waldo (Tuff) King of Sherrard, Illinois, and John King of Florida; sisters, Nellie Power of Moline, Illinois, and Joan Gladfelder of Wamego, Kansas.Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with the Rev. Carl Heien officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery near Unionville, Iowa with full military rites. Visitation will be held Friday, January 15, 2009 from 2:00 pm til 8:00 pm with the family present from 6:00 til 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Memorial has been set to the Fairview Cemetery and can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
