Tom Demry's Obituary
Tom Demry, age 68 of Centerville, Iowa died Monday, January 9, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
Wayne Thomas Demry Jr. was born October 9, 1943 in Appanoose County the son of Wayne T. Demry and Hazel Donald Demry Parcel. He graduated from Seymour High School, Seymour, Iowa, and married Janet Banks May 19, 1962. Tom started working for his father-in-law Ray Banks and worked in the hog yard in West Grove, Iowa. Tom and his brother Charlie owned the Centerville Sale Barn. He also owned and operated Demry Auction for 47 years. He started selling real estate in 1985 and currently was working at both Demry Auction and selling real estate for Action Realty. Tom always raised cattle until last year when his health wouldn't allow him too. He was a member of the Iowa Auctioneers Assoc. and the National Auctioneers Assoc. and the Iowa Cattlemens Assoc. In 2003 the Appanoose County Fair was dedicated to Tom. In 2010 he and Janet were inducted to the State of Iowa 4H Hall of Fame, The 2011 Old Settlers in Seymour the celebration named Tom and Janet Honorees. He was also an honorary member of FFA and a member of the Drake Ave Christian Church. Tom donated his auctioneering skills to numerous fund raisers and benefits over the years. He had enormous love for his family and would like to have coffee at Joe's Quick Shop and go fishing with his buddies.
Tom is survived by his wife Janet, four children Peggy (Kenny) Vandenberg of Albia, Julie (Pat) Mares of Thornton, CO, Sally (Paul) Clark of Hampton, GA and Tom (Kristy) Demry of Centerville, IA; 8 grandchildern Stephanie (Bob) Coughlin of Melrose, Iowa, Vanessa (Jason) Szlachetka of Knoxville, Amber (Matt) Garrett of Hampton, Georgia, Cheryl ( Jonathan) Barker of Centerville, Joe (Carmel) Vandenberg of Albia, Jessica Demry of Centerville, PJ Mares and Sadie Mares of Thornton, CO; 3 great grandchildren Brylee Jaeger, Jayden Szlachetka and Macie Vandenberg, sisters Judy (Frank ) Tometich of Phoenix, AZ, Barbara (Rick) Alexander of Unionville, Iowa, and Jeanette (Gene) Hornaday of Pollock, MO.; stepmother Lois Demry of Unionville, MO; an aunt Juanita McNair of Moravia, Iowa, and an uncle Jerry Schultz of Joplin, MO, and a sister in law, Linda Demry; many nieces nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne Demry and Hazel Demry Parcel, his brother Charles Demry, stepfather Lloyd Parcel, his father and mother in law Ray and Inez Banks, brothers in law Gerald Banks and James Banks and a sister in law Mary Banks.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with Pastor Kay Singley officiating. Friends may call Friday with the family present from 5-8pm at the Lange Funeral Home. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery, Seymour, Iowa. Memorials have been established to either the Appanoose County 4H, Mercy Hospice or the Tom Demry Memorial Fund (to be designated later) and may be sent to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
