Shirley Van Van Dorn's Obituary
Shirley Van Dorn, age 88 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
Shirley was born January 25, 1921, the daughter of William Lloyd and Rena Esther (Miller) Duff in Rathbun, Iowa. She married Ralph Van Dorn on October 27, 1937 at the First Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1984. Shirley was a Nurse Aide for twenty-five years at the St. Joseph Hospital. She was an avid basketball fan and loved to travel. She visited all fifty states, took a cruise on the Panama Canal and went to Europe and China several times. Shirley was a member of the Rural Aid Club since 1940 and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.
Shirley is survived by her children, Carol (Glen) Reeves of Columbus, Nebraska, Charlotte (Larry) Hernandez of O'Fallon, Missouri, Ralph L. Van Dorn of Centerville, Iowa, and Richard Van Dorn of Centerville, Iowa; ten grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; a sister, Natalie Davis of Rock Island, Illinois; two sister-in-laws, Mary Duff of East Moline, Illinois, and Lois Van Dorn of Ankeny, Iowa; a brother-in-law, John (Nancy) Van Dorn of Punta Gorda, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a brother, William (Bud) Duff; and brothers-in-law, Bob Davis and Raymond Van Dorn.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Sunday, January 3, 2010 at the Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Terra Amundson officiating. Burial will follow at the Dale Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday at the funeral home with family present from 6-8 PM. A memorial has been established to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital and may be left at or mailed to the Lange Funeral Home 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
