Shirley Dawson's Obituary
Shirley Francis Dawson, age 81, of Moulton, Iowa, died Saturday, February 28, 2015 at her home. She was born the daughter of Ralph and Bernice (Daniels) Pettis on February 14, 1934 in Moulton. She received her education in the Moulton Community Schools. On April 19, 1950, Shirley was united in marriage to Dale Dawson in Moulton. They helped on the family farm for several years before moving to Ottumwa. While living in Ottumwa she worked for Woolworths and Ranks, sold insurance, and drove a school bus for the Ottumwa Schools. Upon the closing of John Morrell and Co, she and her family returned to Moulton where she and Dale opened the D&S Lounge and later a ceramic and antique shop. She served on both the Farmers Mutual Coop Board and the Cross Lines Center Board for many years. She was a member of the Orleans Church of Christ north of Moulton. She was also a homemaker, her homemade rolls and noodles were delicious at family dinners. She loved her family and was cherished in return. She was preceded in death by: her father, Ralph Pettis on May 1, 1974; husband, Dale Dawson on December 7, 2005; brother, John M. Pettis on May 20, 2004; and a sister, Wilma Strickler on January 1, 2014. Shirley is survived by: her mother, Bernice Pettis of Moulton, Iowa; her sons, Timothy (Diane) Dawson of Moulton,Iowa, Brad Dawson and James (Missy) Dawson of Huntsville, Missouri; daughters, Jennifer (David) Basinger and Candy (Dave) Banks both of Unionville, Iowa; ten grandchildren; Christopher (Beth) Basinger of Norwalk, Iowa, Casey (Tara) Basinger of Moravia, Iowa, Chance Basinger of Ft Sill, Oklahoma, Stacy (Ashley) Dawson of Queen City, Missouri, Taylor (Phillip) Brown of Rose Hill, Iowa, Teagan (Brandon) Padget of Bloomfield, Iowa, Danielle Nardi of Columbia, Missouri, Karress Dawson of Moberly, Missouri, Seth Dawson of Huntsville, Missouri, Brynn (Trevor) Hayes of Huntsville, Missouri; and sixteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Wanda (Jerry) Potter and a sister-in-law, Marylin Pettis both of Moulton. Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Moulton with Rev. Jerry Weller officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltown Cemetery south of Moulton. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 2 pm until 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Moulton with the family present from 6 pm until 8 pm.
