Shirlene Kay Lucas' Obituary
Shirlene Kay Lucas, 76 of Seymour, passed away on Friday, May 7, 2021, at Golden Age Care Center in Centerville under the care of EveryStep Hospice.
Shirlene was born on April 6, 1945 in Chariton, Iowa to Max & Veta (Snuggs) McCarty. She joined older sister, Sandra, and was later joined by Joann.
Shirlene grew up in Promise City in the house her parents built. She was a 1963 graduate of Seymour High School. On July 31, 1964, she married her high school sweetheart, Max Lucas. They shared 56 years together and raised two daughters, Sherri Kay and Kelly Lynn.
In the spring of 1972, Shirlene & Max took on a new business venture by opening Kay's Dairy Freeze on the Seymour square. Shirlene later worked at the Seymour State Bank for many years and then transferred to Hawkeye Bank & Trust in Centerville. Lastly, she worked in the accounting department at Centerville Equipment.
After retirement, Shirlene & Max enjoyed long car rides, taking off in whatever direction the notion hit that day, taking in the scenery & stopping at little diners for lunch, and making note of places that served great home-style meals and delicious pies so that a return trip could be planned.
Shirlene also enjoyed the annual girl's trip with her daughters; shopping - whether it be for clothing, jewelry, purses, or antiques; and traveling - where she had the pleasure of exploring other parts of the US, Europe and Canada. Shirlene especially loved Christmas gatherings with Max, her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Shirlene was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Lee & Helen Lucas, brothers-in-law, Keith Farnam, Richard Lucas, Richard Cobb, and sister-in-law Audrey Lucas. She is survived by her husband Max; daughters, Sherri (Ron) Peterson of Albia and Kelly (Don) Baxter of Spencer.
