Sherman Elgin's Obituary
Sherman Elgin, age 99 of Mystic, Iowa passed away Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the Homestead in Centerville, Iowa.
He was born to William and Effie (Cumberledge) Elgin on October 1, 1915 in Appanoose County, Iowa. Sherman graduated from Centerville High School. He later married June Witthoff on July 19, 1943 at the Christian Church in Centerville.
Sherman entered the United States Navy on June 18, 1942. He served his country faithfully during World War II. Sherman was honorably discharged from the Navy on October 11, 1945.
He began employment with Scott's Dime Store in Centerville during the 1940s. Sherman advanced into management with the company and therefore, moved to numerous cities with the company, including Sterling, Illinois, Elmhurst Illinois, Kansas City and back to Centerville. Sherman started his own furniture store in 1952. He would eventually expand his business to locations in both Centerville and Corydon. His son Huck took over the business in the mid 1970s. Sherman then relocated to the family farm near Mystic, Iowa. He farmed up until the age of 95 when he moved to assisted living.
He enjoyed many hobbies in his free time, including golfing, bowling, playing bridge, playing pitch, gardening and working with cattle. Sherman was a long standing member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville. He also belonged to several organizations, including the Elk's, the American Legion and past member of the Mason Lodge.
Sherman is survived by three children, Peggy White of Columbia, Missouri, Robert Bob (Kristin) Elgin of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Steven ""Huck"" Elgin of Boise, Idaho; ten grandchildren, Seth Elgin, Heather Campney, Jeffrey White, Ryan Elgin, Stephanie Dixon, Sommer White, Grant White, Holly Reeder, Jenny Elgin and Megan Elgin; and ten great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, June Elgin on October 10, 2013; and six siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville with Reverend Jeremy McElvain officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Elgin Cemetery, Mystic. A visitation will be held on Wednesday at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville from 9 AM-8 PM, with the family greeting friends from 6-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
