Sheila M. Starcevich's Obituary
Sheila Starcevich, age 81 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Friday, July 9, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
She was born on January 16, 1929 in Lucas County near Melrose, Iowa the daughter of Mortimer and Margaret (Sheedy) Hannam. After graduating from Moravia High School, she obtained her teaching credentials from Simpson College, in Indianola, IA. She continued her education at Drake University, Truman State University and Indian Hills Community College.
On August 17, 1949 she married George J. Starcevich in Melrose. After marriage she continued teaching in both the Centerville Community Schools as well as St. Mary's Parochial school where she was the first lay teacher.
Sheila was extremely active in the community throughout her entire life. She was a member of several groups and organizations, including the Women's Club, the Milton Women's Club, the Bellair Belles, the Hospital Auxiliary, and the Melrose First Thursday group (the Green Hat Ladies), and the Centerville High School Bleacher Buddies. Sheila was also an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, St Patricks Catholic in Melrose, and St. Francis Catholic Church in Mystic, Iowa, and a member of the church choir.
Sheila enjoyed, traveling, sewing, decorating, painting, singing in the church choir, grandchildren, family and friends.
She is survived by five children, Jo Ann (Jim) Wakefield of Oskaloosa, Iowa, M. Jean Starcevich (and the late John Card) of Aptos, California, Jim (Sandi) Starcevich of Monroe, Iowa, Sheila Jane Starcevich (Howard Friedman M.D.) of South Lake Tahoe, California, and Joe (Felicia) Starcevich of Centerville, Iowa; two sisters, Dorothy Donaghy of Ankeny, Iowa, and Dolores Scieszinski of West Des Moines she is also survived by six grandchildren, Kelli, Abby, Kerri, Tatum, Olivia, and Michael.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George James Starcevich who passed away on December 9, 2008. Sheila was also preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer Hannam; a son-in-law John Card; and a brother Robert D. Hannam and a sister Jean Turbot.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1PM Tuesday July 13, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Dennis Schaab C.PP.S. officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM Monday evening at St. Mary's Catholic Church. A Rosary Service will be held Monday evening at 7:30 PM at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She will be cremated according to her family's wishes. A memorial has been established to The George and Sheila Starcevich Memorial Scholarship Fund, Indian Hill Community College or Mercy Hospital Hospice Room and donations may be left or mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
