Sharon Ann Dyer's Obituary
Sharon Ann Dyer left this earth Friday, September 10, 2021. Born December 30, 1940, to Burris and Lorene (Allen) Havner in Corydon, Iowa she came home to one older sister and after several years another sister joined the family on East State Street in Corydon. Sherry attended school in the small town and graduated with the class of 1959.
Many will remember her as a "scrappy" guard on the high school basketball team, later playing as a forward and a laser eye free throw shooter. Sherry was involved with many activities in school including music; she had a beautiful singing voice that was often featured at local functions. She also sang with the famous Sweet Adelines show chorus in Des Moines. She led the Corydon Band as a Drum Majorette and was the first runner up as a queen in Centerville's Pancake Day Contest.
After graduation, Sherry moved to Des Moines and became a legal secretary at Ahlers Law Firm, later with Aid Insurance. Some may remember her driving her white Corvette or a moped to work. She liked to go and go!
After marriage to Jerry Wayne Dyer, she became a mother with the first grandchild, Michael Scot and then a girl, Dee Anna. She's a grandmother to Anna Dee and a great grandmother to Mary Lorene. Sherry loved being surrounded by her relatives and friends at get togethers of all kinds.
Sherry was best friends with her companion, Mike Thomas for 50 plus years. They met at the Knoxville Raceway in 1970 and continued as partners for life. Sherry and Mike loved racing their sprint and dirt cars; traveling to tracks all over the country they made lots of lifelong friends. They both resided eventually at the Husband Field Airfield that Mike owns and operates located a few miles north of Adel, Iowa. Many could see her from the highway and would honk and wave while she tended to her beautiful, deep red geraniums. She and Lilli (her basset hound) took their rides in the golf cart out to the runway and back daily (if not more often) over the picturesque grounds. Her food catering business was known simply as "Sara's", catering food and drink at countless auctions. Everyone enjoyed her cooking and loved her holiday fudge and hot chocolate! For years Sherry also worked as a Hallmark merchandiser in local grocery stores, where more friendships were made and cherished.
Survivors include her life companion, Mike Thomas, basset hound, Lilli, children: Michael Scot Dyer and Dee Anna Dyer; granddaughter, Anna Dee McCleskey (Mark), great granddaughter, Mary Lorene McCleskey, sisters: Karen (Havner) Hanson and Joyce (Havner) Milner, nephews, Derek Milner (Betsy) and Gregg Hanson, niece, Megan Weaver (Cale), great nieces: Avery Hanson and Caroline Weaver, great nephew, Jake Hanson, Michael Thomas, David Thomas, along with numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Burris and Lorene Havner, Ralph and Evelyn Thomas, son-in-law, Rex Phillips and two brothers-in-law: David Milner and Gary Hanson. Mike and Dee's father, Jerry and his parents, Grace and Wayne Dyer have also passed.
A celebration of Sherry's life will take place Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Thomas Funeral Home - 303 E. Jefferson St. - Corydon, Iowa from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Memorials may be given to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com or facebook.com/thomasfuneralhome.
