What can you say about a super friend. We'd known Sam since our little ones played together when their family lived in Des Moines. As our kids grew and they moved to Mystic, we'd still get together for birthdays, graduations, marriages, and of course camping and fishing. Sam was always right there with the bait ready to take me fishing while Bill worked the night shift. Then Bill would make it down to the lake ready to fish first thing in the morning and we'd already have a ton caught. Sam could always find the fish...he talked a lot, but he still caught the big ones. He'd take us to play bingo on Wed. evenings, when we were camping out at the lake. Ours grandkids love that. He was like a 2nd grandpa to our grandkids...He always made them feel SO special, as he did everyone. He was always laughing...cracking a joke, but there were times when he was serious...he was always thinking about Connie and the boys. He was always looking for things to sell for the auction, or buy for Connie...it took him 3 weeks to decide what type of fruit tree he wanted for his back yard...and Christmas was pretty fun. I was so surprised he knew exactly what he was going to get Connie...little did I know, she wrote it down, color, style and size. He never told me that until I believe it was the last year he worked for Bill thru the holiday. Sam was a great listener, not just mmm, or okay, he really listened...he also knew how to eat...which came in handy when I had him be my taster when I was trying out new recipes. Sam really enjoyed life...and made sure whoever was with him enjoyed it too. He was truly a great friend, and a fantastic human being. ..We're going to miss our friend, and I'm sure there will be times that Bill or I will say let's call Sam and Connie, and then take a minute to stop and think about all the wonderful, wonderful memories we made with them. We'll think of him often & always with Love. Posted by Bill and Lori Bates - Des Moines, IA - friends October 16, 2013
