Sendel Henry Barr's Obituary
Sendel Henry Barr, age 87, of Centerville, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026 at MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines.
Sendel Barr, a man known for his gentle spirit, steady faith, and love for the simple joys of life, was born on June 2, 1938, in the Weaver Settlement, Nova Scotia, Canada, to William and Laura (Lewis) Barr. Raised in a close-knit community, Sendel developed a strong foundation of faith that would guide the course of his life.
Answering a call to ministry, Sendel pursued his education at Alberta Bible College in Alberta, Canada, and later continued his theological studies at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. With a heart devoted to serving others, he spent many years pastoring churches throughout Canada and the United States, offering guidance, comfort, and encouragement to the congregations he faithfully served.
Outside of the pulpit, Sendel was a man who delighted in life's small treasures. He had a knack for finding hidden gems at garage sales and thrift stores, often returning home with something unique or interesting. He especially enjoyed collecting watches, clocks, and hats or caps, items that reflected both his personality and his appreciation for the passage of time.
Sendel loved taking relaxing drives in his Ford car, often heading toward familiar places that brought him peace and joy. Trips to Lake Thunderhead were among his favorites, as were visits to Ye Old Town Square in Cincinnati, Iowa. He cherished simple conversations and laughter shared with friends at local coffee shops across Iowa.
In his Shamrock neighborhood, Sendel became a familiar and beloved presence. Though some neighbors admitted they couldn't quite remember his name, they affectionately called him "Preacher," a nickname that suited him well and spoke to the kindness and faith he carried wherever he went.
Sendel will be remembered for his devotion to ministry, his friendly conversations, and the warm, approachable spirit that made him a friend to many. His life was one of faith, fellowship, and quiet joy in the everyday moments.
Left to honor Sendel's memory are his nephew, Clary Prime; his niece, Shanna Prime; his sister-in-law, Hilda Barr; as well as several close friends.
Sendel was preceded in death by his parents, William and Laura Barr; his brothers, Gordon Barr and Lester Barr; his sisters, Annie Dennison, Della Prime, Dora Bell; and infant sister, Jean.
