Ruth Ann Dickerson's Obituary
Centerville, Iowa lost a tremendous friend and confidant Friday, May 30, 2014. Ruth Ann Dickerson passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family. Ruth Ann was born December 29, 1940 to Centerville residents Raymond & Deloris (Davis) Houser. She received her education from Centerville Schools. She was united in marriage to Richard Lee Felkner in June 1959; he preceded her in death in July 1966. To this union were three children: Robin Ann, Kelly Lee, and Randy Richard. Later in life Ruth Ann would marry again to Charles Lyle Dickerson on the 22nd of December 1967. He preceded her in death in November of 2003. Ruth Ann received an Associate of Arts Degree from Indian Hills Community College in Centerville; Bachelors' Degree in Education from Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville; and a Masters' Degree from Drake University. She had a passion for working with people, especially children. She taught Title I at Central Elementary School and later at Mystic Elementary, until retiring in 2002. Ruth Ann was the recipient of numerous Awards, including; Masonic Teacher of The Year, CEA Mishler Award, Certificate of Recognition Award upon her retirement in 2002, Friend Recognition, United Methodist Women, Special Mission Recognition, Best Teacher Award, Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, Girl of the Ear, and Girl of the Year. Ruth Ann always gave to the community that she loved, Volunteering at Pancake Day (having her children and grandchildren help at the milk stand), Voting Polls, Blood Donor Days, M&M's (Methodist Church), Historic Preservation Committee, Friends of Drake Public Library, First United Methodist Church, and was still able to substitute teach until January 2014. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, PEO, President of TTT, and on the Board of the Municipal Housing Agency. Ruth Ann, not only loved spending precious time with her family, she cherished the time spent with her friends. She was an upbeat lively woman, always a smile on her face and didn't know the definition of the word no. Always a positive note and a helping hand made Ruth Ann Dickerson a valuable part of her family, church and community. She will be truly missed by all who knew, and met her, family, friends, and acquaintances. Survivors include; three children: Robin Salsberry of Windsor Heights, IA, Kelly Greenlee (David) of Raleigh, NC, Randy Felkner (Suzanne) of Danville, CA, four grandchildren: Landon Salsberry of Iowa City, IA, Allie Greenlee of Raleigh, NC, Reid Greenlee of Raleigh, NC, Fynn Felkner of Danville, CA, five siblings: Nancy Robinson of Mystic, Bert Houser ( Pat ) of Durham, NC, Susie Golic (Larry) of Centerville, Norman Houser (Sally) of Centerville, Anita Henry ( David ) of Osceola. She now joins her first husband Richard Felkner, second husband, Charles Dickerson and brother Ray G. Houser in heaven. Visitation will be Monday, June 2, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 410 North Main in Centerville. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in Centerville with Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. Interment will be in Jerome Cemetery. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, 410 North Main, Drake Public Library or the Ruth Ann Dickerson Scholarship Fund at the First United Methodist Church, 410 North Main.
