Rod Owens' Obituary
Rodrick Grant Owens, 89, of Allerton passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Indianola. Rod was born to John R. and Goldie (Rash) Owens on December 7, 1925 in Cambria, Iowa and was the oldest of four children. He received his education from Derby High School graduating in 1944. He was united in marriage to his classmate Magdalena Pearcy on August 8th of that year, just before shipping out with the United States Navy to serve in World War II. To this union came three children: Linda, Richard and Debra. He was preceded in death by Magdalena in 2007, after 63 years of marriage. After his service in the Navy, he returned to Iowa and began working as a DX fuel tanker driver for Don Duncan of Allerton. Later, he and Maggie purchased the DX service station in Allerton, which they ran together for over 35 years before retiring. Through this, Rod made many friends and gained much respect as an honest businessman. Rod was a member of the McClough-Halfhill American Legion Post #379 in Allerton. He very much enjoyed fishing, turkey hunting and â??puttering' in his garden and yard. He even had the moon flowers of his garden pictured in the Corydon Times-Republican. Rod loved watching his beloved Chicago Cubs and even dabbled in poetry writing. From 1986 to 2005, Rod and Maggie spent much of their winters in Arizona where they relished the sunny days and spent a good deal of time with the company of friends and extended family. Rod is survived by three children: Linda (Jim) Todden of Indianola, Richard Owens of Ames, Debra Wilson of Windsor Heights, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his siblings: Robert Owens of Chariton, Norman (Juanita) Owens of Weldon, and Mary Lou Jacobs of Indianola. Rod considered himself lucky to have found a very dear friend and dancing partner in Nelma Hysell of Allerton.
