Richard Leo Cobb was born February 4, 1932 at his parents' home NW of Sewal, Iowa. He passed away July 21, 2014 at the Continental Care Center in Seymour from pneumonia and other complications. He was the son of Ervin D. and Velma (Halfhill) Cobb. He was a farm boy who learned early on to work hard. He was a member of the Jackson-Howard 4-H Club. His county fair project was Shropshire lambs, earning him purple ribbons. By the age of fourteen he was custom baling small square bales for area farmers. He attended school at Sewal Consolidated School, graduating in 1949. He played basketball in high school and would be a considered a good '3-point' player. After graduation he stayed on the farm to help his parents. Richard married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Lucas, on December 28, 1951 at the Centerville Baptist Church. They lived with his parents until he was drafted into the army almost a year later. He served in Korea, receiving an honorable discharge in January 1953. They purchased a farm adjoining his parents' farm. They lived in the 'little house' for 10 years. Daughters Rhonda and Brenda were born during this time. When his parents built a new home in Corydon, the family moved to Richard's home place. Son Gene Richard was born, joining two big sisters. Richard was a good farmer, practicing conservation. He had a cow/calf herd as well as a farrow to finish hog operation. Shirley was at his side helping with the haying and the livestock. He loved sports. He and Shirley attended their children's activities as well as their grandchildren's. They also attended a few activities of their Minnesota grandchildren. He liked the Iowa Hawkeyes, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Later he watched the Minnesota Vikings. He enjoyed westerns on TV. Richard was a 52-year member of the Allerton American Legion Post 379. He was adjutant of the post for several years. He served on the Wayne County Veterans Affairs Committee for 10 years. Richard's health began failing in the 1990's. The farm was sold in 2000 and they moved to Corydon in 2001. He first suffered a heart attack and then a stroke. In May 2012 he entered the Continental Care Center in Seymour. In April 2006 Richard accepted Jesus as his Savior. Richard is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley, and three children and their families: Rhonda Ewing and husband Rod of Clio, Brenda Boyce and husband Jeff of Corydon, and Gene Cobb and wife Denise of Oronoco, Minnesota. Survivors also include six grandchildren: Justin Ewing and wife Erica of Clio, Brooke Richman and husband Jared of Humeston, Sara Boyce of Knoxville, Garrett, Lindsay and William Cobb of Oronoco, Minnesota and great grandchildren: Chloe, Dalee and Tavian Ewing of Clio and Cambell and Hudson Richman of Humeston, and many cousins and other relatives. He considered Shirley's siblings as his family also. He was preceded in death by his parents, a still-born brother, his wife's parents, Lee and Helen Lucas, brother-in-law Richard 'Pete' Lucas, several aunts, uncles and cousins. Richard was a kind and honest man. He had many friends. He will be missed.
