Richard 'Rick' L. Helmick's Obituary
Richard 'Rick' LeRoy Helmick, age 63 of Moravia, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, with his family by his side.
Rick was born on June 26, 1954, in Centerville, Iowa to Ernest and Hazel Helmick. The 9th of 10 children. He graduated from Moravia High School with the class of 1972.
Rick sheared sheep for many years with his dad, brother, brother in-laws, and many friends. Many of these years was spent in Colorado, where he loved to be.
For the last 12 years, he has worked for Bruening Rock Company, hauling rock for S&S quarry in Knoxville Iowa. Ricks favorite thing about this job, was the people he worked with, and being known as Little Rick.
Rick loved to fish, hunt, and just being outdoors. He often said the Indians knew how to live. Rick also enjoyed spending time with his friends, and especially his family at the family get-togethers.
Rick is survived by six sisters and one brother, Bonnie (Bob) Prose of Blakesburg, Iowa, Loretta (Fred) DuVall of Moravia, Iowa, Keith (Lavonne) Helmick of Moravia, Iowa, Sue (Dick) Glosser of Blakesburg, Iowa, Shirley (Colin) Cridlebaugh of Princeton, Missouri, Kaye Glosser of Moravia, Iowa, Julie Greene of Pella, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father Ernest Helmick, mother Hazel Helmick, brother Dean Helmick, and sister Rosetta Scott, 2 brother in-laws and 3 nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30AM, Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Moravia with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia. A visitation will take place on Friday, February 23, 2018 with family greeting friends from 5-7PM. Memorials have been established to the Moravia First Responders, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
