Richard Paul Cortesio's Obituary
Richard Paul Cortesio, age 82, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Friday, August 30, 2019 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
Richard was born on October 30, 1936 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Charles and Maggie (Mitchell) Cortesio, Sr. He graduated from Centerville High School with the Class of 1957. Following graduation, he joined the United States National Guard. He served his country faithfully, and was honorable discharged on April 30, 1963. Richard was united in marriage to Joyce Ferguson on August 6, 1958. To this union came two children: Monica and Steve. On June 26, 1965, Richard was united in marriage to Loraine Houser. To this union came two children: Brian and Bradley.
Richard was a meat cutter at Easters Super Value in Centerville for over 30 years. In retirement, he relocated to Des Moines. He liked to keep himself busy and enjoyed cooking, gardening, lawncare, detailing cars, spending time with family and playing the slot machines at the casino. Richard was a longtime member of the St. Marys Catholic Church in Centerville.
Left to honor Richards memory are his children, Monica Cortesio of Des Moines, Steve (Joetta) Cortesio of Plano, Iowa and Brian (Michelle) Cortesio of Box Elder, South Dakota; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews; his significant other of 43 years, Katie Roberts of Des Moines and her children that Richard accepted as his step-children, Shar Totten of Lithia, Florida, Rick (Cindy) Roberts of Centerville, Mike Roberts (preceded in death), Donald (Melanie) Roberts of Alleman, Iowa and Billy Roberts of Des Moines; as well as numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren that always knew Richard as "Grandpa".
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maggie Cortesio, Sr; an infant son, Bradley Cortesio; his sisters, Rose, Jennie, Mary, Theresa, and Ann; his brothers, Joe, Louis, Charles Jr., Tom, Tony, and Carmen; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Deacon Ed Kamerick officiating. Military honors will immediately follow the service at Lange Funeral Home.
