Rev. Carl A. Heien's Obituary
Rev. Carl A Heien, age 79, of Centerville, Iowa, died Monday, December 7, 2015 at his home in Centerville. He was born the son of Howard and Thelma (Barker) Heien on September 15, 1936 in Olathe, Kansas. He graduated from the Pleasanton, Kansas High School in 1953, and would further his education at Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tennessee and also Phillips University & Seminary in Enid, Oklahoma and received his Masters of Divinity.After graduation from Seminary School, Carl took his first full time pastorate at the First Christian Church in Monte Vista, Colorado, it was there he would meet his future wife, Sharon Carey. They were united in marriage on July 13, 1963 at Sharon's home church in Clifton, Colorado. Carl was then called to serve a church in Burlington, Kansas followed by a move to Hayesville, Kansas at the First Christian Church there. After serving there for a time, Carl pastored the First Christian Church for over thirteen years in Fredonia, Kansas. Then in 1987, Carl was asked to pastor the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville, Iowa for which he served over 17 years. He retired in 2004, which only lasted a year then he began serving as interim pastor for the Fairview Church of the Brethren near Udell, Iowa followed by full time pastor and recently served as Coordinator of Pastoral Team. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Howard Heien and Thelma (Heien) Bergman, step-father, Ray Bergman, his brother, Bill Heien; a sister, Dorothy Holt-Long; and a son, Carl Heien, Jr on January of 2007.Carl is survived by: his wife of over 52 years, Sharon Heien of Centerville, Iowa; a son, Mark Heien of Seattle, Washington; granddaughter, Hannah E. Heien of Seattle, Washington; daughter-in-law, Renee Heien of Des Moines, Iowa; sister-in-law, Betty Jean Carey of Centerville, Iowa; along with many nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held at 11 am, on Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Revs Larry Wright and Tom Eastman officiating. Burial will follow at the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. Visitation will be held from 2 pm until 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville on Thursday, December 10, 2015 with the family present from 6 pm until 8 pm at the funeral home.Memorials can be made in his name and left or mailed to the funeral home.
