Phillip Johnson's Obituary
Phillip Randolph Johnson, son of Earl and Hazel (Britton) Johnson, was born on January 6, 1935 in Decatur county. Phillip passed away on September 2, 2020 in Hospice care at the Wayne County Hospital surrounded by family. Phill grew up in southern Iowa and graduated from Wayne Community High School in 1953. He was united in marriage to his best friend, Wilma Jackson on July 29, 1954. To this union two children were born, Dinah Pauline and Robert Randolph. In his younger years Phill worked for Voltmaster Batteries where he acquired the nick name of Big Sweed. During this time Phill also moonlighted as a carpenter. Later, Phill opened his own business, Phillip Johnson Construction. Phill touched so many lives. Not only by working in many homes in Wayne county but also by being a mentor to many high school boys in the summer time. Phill also passed on his carpenter skills to his son Bob, son-in-law Mark and grandsons Andrew and Dylan. They loved working with Phill but often times had to tell him to speak up and quite mumbling. Phill loved his family beyond words and would do anything for them. Always willing to lend a helping hand. Phill was an avid football fan watching any football team on TV but loved the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also loved to watch old westerns on TV and probably had seen many of them numerous times. He loved to garden and him and Wilma could be found playing a game of cards or just taking a drive on a summer night. Survivors include children: Dinah (Mark) Goben of Altoona and Robert Johnson of Corydon; grandchildren: Sheila (Dan) Roberts of Bondurant, Andrew (Mary) Goben of Corydon and Dylan Johnson of Altoona; great grandchildren: Benton and Ava Goben of Corydon and Morgan Roberts of Bondurant; sister, Gereldine (Keith) Thompson of Tabor, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Phyllis Jelsma of Clio and Sherryl Selby of Allerton. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Wilma; sisters: Florence Lammers and Beverly Johnson; his brother, Lewis Johnson; brothers-in-law: Gerald Jelsma, Gene Salsberry, Wesley Selby and Robert Lammers; sister-in-law, Charlene Salsberry and in-laws: Paul and Ethel Jackson.
