Perry Brock's Obituary
Thomas Perry Brock was born on January 18, 1941 and passed away on December 24, 2019 at the Wayne County Hospital. He was born in Putnam County Missouri, but his parents Samuel Watson Brock and Gladys Irene Johnson Brock moved their family to Wayne County, Iowa, where they lived the remainder of their lives. Perry graduated from Allerton High School in 1959. After graduation he worked at the Allerton milk plant, but quickly realized it was not his passion. He quickly changed his profession landing a job at Murphy Clothing store where he found his love for talking to customers and helping them find the clothes that suited their needs. This is where he developed a love for creating eye catching window displays and artfully wrapping gifts. This was especially true during Christmas season which was his favorite time of year. People will remember him as a talker. He loved to visit with his customers and get to know everyone on a personal level. He also loved his daily coffee breaks at the local caf as a means to keep up to date on the local news and socializing with his friends. He drank enough coffee to earn himself the nickname "Juan Valdez" from Jeff's classmates that worked at the caf. On August 7, 1966, Perry married Cynthia Sue Baker at the Christian Church in Humeston, Iowa. One son, Jeffery, completed the family in 1971. Perry became the owner of Murphy Clothing store in 1985 after purchasing it from Dennis Murphy. As a tribute to the man who taught him so much about the clothing business, he kept the Murphy Clothing name. He closed the business at the end of 2002 and entered the retirement life after being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing a hip replacement. After retiring, he and Sue enjoyed spending the winter in Sun City, Arizona for several years before on-going health issues made traveling too difficult. When he wasn't working, Perry enjoyed working outside tending to his yard and flower gardens, traveling to watch his son's and grandson's sporting events, fishing, and visiting with his friends. He also enjoyed listening to an eclectic mix of music which ranged from Jimmy Buffett, Billy Idol, Tina Turner, Joe Crocker, U2, and many others. Surviving Perry is his wife of 53 years, Sue, son Jeff, daughter-in-law Tricia, grandchildren Griffen, Klein and Magnus Brock of Clive, IA, sister Nancy Wiltamuth of Allerton, IA, and sister-in-law Linda Wicker of Des Moines, IA. He also has 10 nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 3, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Interment will immediately follow at Humeston Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Memorials can be given to the Prairie Trails Museum in Corydon, IA or EveryStep Hospice in Centerville, IA.
