Veta Pearl Shanahan, 83 of Centerville passed away Saturday, March 07, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. Pearl was born on May 23, 1925 to Taylor & Iva (Swan) McCoy in rural Centerville. She received her education in Appanoose County, graduating from Centerville High School in 1942. Pearl married Don Shanahan on September 27, 1942 in Unionville, Missouri. She worked for years at Spurgeons as a bookkeeper. Pearl was a member of the First Baptist Church in Centerville for over 50 years. She was one of the Founding members of HOPE School for the mentally disabled. Pearl enjoyed art, gardening, painting, crocheting, sewing, crossword puzzles and time spent with her family; especially her grandchildren. Pearl is survived by her husband of 66 years, Don Shanahan of Centerville, two children; David Shanahan (Melinda) of Oskaloosa, Sherry Brill (Bob) of West Burlington, two grandchildren; Heather Haefner (Pat) of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Ashley Heid (Chris) of Swisher, Iowa, six great grandchildren, two sisters; Bernice Craver of Exline, Ruth Benz of Centerville and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Linda Shanahan; grandson, Jeffrey Hackathorn, two sisters; Inez Banks, Irene Crow and a brother Lester McCoy. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Thomas Funeral Home with Pastor Lloyd Johnston officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior from 10-11 a.m. A private family interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.
