Paul James Varner's Obituary
Paul James Varner, age 89, of Centerville, Iowa, died Monday, December 8, 2014 at his home in Centerville. He was born the son of Paul and Nellie (Orman) Varner on June 4, 1925 in Centerville, Iowa. He graduated from the Centerville Community High School.Paul served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Force. He was first united in marriage to Betty Ponsetto, they were later divorced, then was united in marriage to Ilene Barnthouse, and they were later divorced. Then in 1962, Paul was united in marriage to Alice Creech in Mystic, Iowa; and later on November 24, 1969, Paul was united in marriage to Martha Joy Leach. He worked for a time at McGraw Edison in Centerville as Toastmaster Engineer; he was also a gunsmith and made the stocks for Weatherby gun company and later would retire from Young Radiator as a Fabrication Operator in Centerville. He was at one time, Mayor for the town of Numa, Iowa.He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Alice Varner and his wife, Martha 'Suzy' Varner; son, Vance Ponsetto; and a daughter, Sherry Varner.Paul is survived by: his sons, Laurel Varner and his wife, Kathy of Mystic, Iowa, Lance Varner and his wife, Dottie of Emerson, Iowa, Clay Varner and his wife, Heather of Riverside, Iowa; step-son, Chett Winchell of Broomfield, Colorado; daughters, Lorene Johnson of Centerville, Iowa, Heather Koller and her husband, Glenn of Arizona, Layne Weeks of Leeburg, Florida and Kathy Ponsetto of Englewood, Florida; Ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.Funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at 10 am at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Walter King officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville following the services. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 from 2 pm until 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home with the family present from 6 pm until 8 pm.Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association and left or mailed to the funeral home.
