Paul Spencer Jr.'s Obituary
Paul (Junior) Spencer, age 82 of Moravia, died Sunday, July 20, 2014 at his home in Moravia, Iowa.
He was born December 21, 1931 in Moravia to Paul Samuel and Lelia Pearl Pence Spencer.
A 1949 graduate of Moravia high school, he enlisted with the US Army, served in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954.
On October 2, 1955 he was united in marriage to Donna June West in Unionville, IA.
He graduated from Iowa Barber College in Des Moines in 1956.
Paul Jr. worked as proprietor of Spencer Grocery on the square in Moravia from 1956 until he sold the business in 2005. Four generations of his family were involved in the business, including his parents, his children, and two of his grandchildren.
He served on the Moravia Volunteer Fire Department, the Moravia City Council, and the Moravia Fall Festival Committee and was a member of the Moravia Booster Club, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by both parents, brothers John, Edwin and Jack, and sister-in-law Frances Spencer.
Survivors include his wife Donna, children Robin (Barney) Pepper of Walhalla, SC, Jim Spencer of Moravia, Susan Spencer of Moravia, and David Spencer of Austin, TX, grandchildren Jamie Knapp-Spencer, Jessi (Brad) Nicoletto, Josh (Sarah) Spencer and Paul Pepper, great-grandchildren Tyler and Karli Knapp, and Cameron and Madison Nicoletto, sisters-in-law Eileen Spencer and Darlene Spencer, brother-in-law Norman (Lillian) West and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2 PM, Monday, July 28, 2014 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia with Reverend Francis Warren officiating. Inurnment with military rites will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Moravia. A visitation will take place on Sunday at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia from 12 PM-6 PM, with the family present from 4-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Moravia Fire Department and First Responders and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
