Opal Genola Mullins' Obituary
Opal Genola (Mercer) Mullins, age 96, of Moravia, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Centerville Specialty care in Centerville.
Opal was born on August 21, 1923, in a small house just miles from the Missouri border in Appanoose County. She was the daughter of Otho and Ivy (Baugher) Mercer. Opal concluded her formal education at Centerville High School. She was then married to Cyril Preston "CP" Mullins. Despite CPs insistence that she was born in Missouri, Opal always insisted she was an Iowa woman! Their 55-year marriage brought four children, Carol Robertson, Larry (Donna) Mullins, Roger Mullins and Mary Joyce (James) VeVerka.
Opal and CP spent the early years of marriage in Exline and Newton, but a majority of their lives were spent farming the hills near Soap Creek, north of Unionville, Iowa. After their children left home, Opal and CP spent most weekends attending country jams and dances in the area. Opal managed to be at home some weekends to continue the tradition of homemade rolls and blackberry pies. She never like to cook, but always was willing to throw another potato in the pot for latecomers at Sunday dinner.
Left to cherish Opals memory are her two children, Roger, and Mary Joyce (James); a daughter in law, Donna; seven grandchildren, Robin (Jim) Brock, Michelle (Ross) Montoya, Lance Robertson, James (Lindsey) VeVerka, Benton VeVerka, Jessie (Mackenzie) Mullins, Corey (Sheila) Mullins; three sisters in law, Norma Mercer, Marolyn Mullins, and Maxine Hager; a brother in law, Bill Mullins; fifteen great and great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, Otho and Ivy Mercer; her husband, CP Mullins; two children, Carol and Larry; one sister, Golda Hicks; four brothers, Guerney, Lester, Virgil and Orval Mercer; and a grandson, Jody Robertson.
