Norma was born October 14, 1928 in Corning, Iowa to Fritz and Thelma (Sutton) Townsend. She attended school in Pacific Junction and graduated with the class of 1946. She continued her education by attending business school in Omaha, NE. On March 11, 1947 Norma was united in marriage to Wallace E. Maddy in Hiawatha, Kansas. To this union, three children were born: Stanley, Elizabeth, and Steven. Norma and Wally made their home in Corning, Iowa for several years while raising their three children. After Norma's children graduated, she went to work as the Purchasing Agent for Roseman Brothers in Ottumwa, Iowa and later worked several years in the same position at Ideal Supply in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where she was employed until 1983. Norma was a lifelong, active member of the Oskaloosa Business and Professional Women organization where she served as local president and also held the position as Iowa's BPW state president. Norma had many hobbies including crocheting, feeding corn to her squirrels, and watching soap operas and sports on T.V. She used her crocheting skills to make gifts for many friends and family. Her biggest joy later in life was attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities in the company of her daughter Elizabeth.
